Thomas has to take a driving test which is in two parts.
The first part is theoretical. He has a 0.4 chance of passing this.
The second is practical. He has a 0.5 chance of passing this.
Draw a tree diagram covering passing or failing the two parts of the test.
What is the probability that he passes both parts?

Given :  Thomas has to take a driving test which is in two parts.

The first part is theoretical. He has a 0.4 chance of pas sing this.

The second is practical. He has a 0.5 chance of pas sing this.

To Find:  the probability that he pas ses both parts

Solution:

Theoretical              Pas s   0.4                      Fail 0.6

practical         Pas s 0.5    Fail 0.5        Pas s 0.5    Fail 0.5

Pa ss when pas ses in  both

both are independent events

probability that he pas ses both parts = 0.4 * 0.5

= 0.2

probability that he pas ses both parts = 0.2
