Is BF3 a weaker Lewis Acid than BCl3? The answer is actually BCl3 and not BF3 (though BF3 is expected to be the answer). The boron atom in BF3 is sp2 hybridized, with a vacant 2p orbital. This effect is called backbonding, because electron density is leaving the more electronegative atom.
