Halku is a typical Indian farmer who toils against the zamindari system. he works very hard in his fields o grow crops, but the rewards are reaped by the landlords. The story revolves around his pride in farming that he chooses over keeping warm in winters. he pays the money he has saved to by a blanket so that he would not be insulted by Sahna. But, the chilly weather gets the better of him: neither his straw cover, nor his dog Jabra can provide him warmth. he burns leaves to stay warm and then falls into a deep sleep while animals run around in his field, destroying the standing crop. But, it is the one way in which he gets saved from toiling away in the bitter cold: he has no option but to work as a daily wage labourer now!
