Nepalgunj has a humid subtropical type of climate (Köppen climate classification Cwa) with warm, wet summers and cold, dry winters. Nepalgunj lies in the Terai plains in Nepal, only 100 miles north of the border with India. The tropical location of the city in the plains of a hilly country bears a significant influence on its climate.

Nepalgunj lies at an altitude of 150 meters above sea level and has mostly flat topography. The city lies in the southern lowland of the Nepali Terai region, which is the northern extension of the Gangetic Plain. The region is home to many watersheds, rivers, and lakes. Nepalgunj is at a modest distance from the Himalayan foothills, and the vegetation in the region consists of tall grasslands, sal forests, and scrubs.

Nepalgunj has hot summers, wet monsoons, and cold winters. The summers are humid and hot as temperatures reach a peak of 37.8°C (100°F) in May. Summer nights are warm and humid with occasional rain. The rainy season is hot, sticky and wet, and lasts for more than three months starting from the mid of June. Winters are pleasant with mostly clear skies and no frost. The cold season can see chilly nights at its peak in January. Spring and autumn are short, mild, and mostly dry.

The annual rainfall in Nepalgunj is an abundant 1447.8mm (57") as it lies in the vast Gangetic Plain. June to September brings monsoonal rains that contribute approximately 85% of the yearly precipitation. Floods frequently occur in the region due to the heavy rainfall and steepness of river channels that descend from the hilly areas. Snowfall and frost are rare, but the conditions can be foggy and overcast during the wet season. The vast plains see substantial wind speeds that can multiply the effect of the cold. The best time to visit Nepalgunj
