Peat is sometimes considered a “slowly renewable energy” and is classified as a “solid fossil” rather than a fossil fuel due to the negligible carbon content. Hence lignite is considered as the lowest grade fossil fuel since it contains sufficient carbon to to be used as a mainstream fuel.
