Glass is cheaper than plastic. Glass is made from sand which is everywhere. Glass will last for centuries but plastics will dull, turn yellow and weather in sunlight. Glass resists abrasion and doesn't scratch up like glass does. We used glass for centuries and know how to use it but clear plastics are only 50 years old
