Three blocks of mass 3 kg, 5 kg and 8 kg connected through light strings are placed on a smooth horizontal

surface as shown below. The block of mass 3 kg is being pulled with a force of 40 N. [3]

Find :

(a) Acceleration of the blocks.

(b) Tension (T1) in the string connecting between 5 kg and 3 kg block.

(c) Tension (T2) in the string connecting between 5 kg and 8 kg block.

The tension in the string is 12.5 N and 32.5 N respectively.

Explanation:

We are given that:

Mass of blocks = 3 kg, 5 kg and 8 kg

Force applied on block of mass 3 Kg =  40 N

To Find: Acceleration of block =?

Solution:

Acceleration = Force / Mass (total)

a = 40 / 16 = 2.5 m/s^2

Now tension "T2" = ma = 8 x 2.5 = 20 N

T1 - T2 = 5 x 2.5 = 12.5 N

T1 - 20 = 12.5 N

T1 = 12.5 + 20

T1 = 32.5 N

Thus the tension in the string is 12.5 N and 32.5 N respectively.
