Given :  three buoys k l and m show the course of a boat race.

MK= 4 km,   KL = 9km and angle MKL =108°

To Find : Distance ML

Solution:

cosine rule

c² = a² + b² - 2abCosC

a = MK = 4 km

b = KL = 9 km

∠C = ∠MKL =108°

c = ML

(ML)² = 4²  + 9²  - 2(4)(9) Cos 108°

=> (ML)² = 16  + 81  - 72 (-0.309)

=> (ML)² = 16  + 81  - 72 (-0.309)

=> (ML)² =119.248

=> ML = 10.92 km

Distance ML = 10.92 km
