Given: Three capacitors C₁, C₂ and C₃ are connected to a 6V battery shown in figure.

To Find: charges on the three  capacitors.

Solution:

STEP 1:

C₂ and C₃ are connected in parallel.

so add these capacitance in parallel, we get:

                      C_p = C₂ + C₃

                           = 5 + 5 = 10μF

                    so, C_p = 10μF         (shown in fig. 2 attached)

Step 2:

Now,  C_p and C₁ are in series.

so add these capacitance in series, we get:

                   1/C_s = (1/C_p) + (1/C_1)

                            = (1/10) + (1/10)

                           C_s = 5μF         (shown in fig. 3 attached)

Step 3:

Now in fig. 3 we have only voltage source and capacitance of 5μF.

    we know that Q = CV    ..................eqn 1

              here, C = 5μF

                and V = 6V

    Put the value of C and V in eqn 1, we get;

                        Q = 5 × 6 =30μC

step 4:

Now, as the capacitor C₂ and C₃ are of equal value so charge will equally distribute among them.

So, 15μC charge will flow through C₂ and C₃

total 30μC charge will flow through C₁

charge distribution is shown in fig.4 attached.

Answer:

Charge (Q₁) flowing through C₁ = 30μC

Charge (Q₂) flowing through C₂ = 15μC

Charge (Q₃) flowing through C₃ = 15μC
