In October 1861, the farmer rebellion in Phulaguri, Middle Assam, was the first ever peasant uprising within Indian liberty movement, much before the Champaran movement took place under Mahatma Gandhi's leadership. It was also the first Indian freedom non-cooperation movement, since the farmers of the Phulaguri area stopped paying the UK government taxes and thus openly defied it.
