One of the main goal-oriented management duties in a company is controlling. To make sure that activities are carried out in accordance with the plans and to take corrective action if necessary, it is a process of comparing the actual performance with the company's established standards.
Three characteristics of the controlling function of management are:
- Managerial Function: Controlling is one of the functions of management. Every management has a responsibility to do it, not only the chief executive. Whatever tasks are given to a manager are his responsibility. He will monitor his employees' performance to make sure that objectives are met.
- Forward-Looking: Controlling is forward-looking. Since the past is already past, it cannot be changed. To determine the causes of the poor results, the management will examine past performance and to ensure that future work is not compromised, a corrective measure will be implemented.
- The essence of Control is Action: When outcomes do not meet expectations, corrective action must be taken immediately. If immediate corrective measures are not implemented, the goal of controlling will be lost. If the marketing department's sales fall short of the benchmark, efforts will be made to guarantee that performance is high moving forward. If such measures are not taken, there will be an absence of controlling. In short, having immediate control is necessary.
