Three children went guava picking and picked 65 guavas between them. At the first tree they each picked the same number of guavas. At the second tree they each collected three times the number of guavas that they had collected at the first tree. After picking from the third tree they had five times the number of guvas they had after picking from the first two trees. At the fourth tree they collected only five guavas altogether. How many guavas did each child collect at the first tree?

Answer:

1 guava

Step-by-step explanation:

1. Let us change first the information given in the problem to mathematical expressions:

1st tree:       n

2nd tree:   3n

3rd tree:    5(3n+n)

4th tree:     +5

2. To solve for n, we will only use the information in the 3rd and 4th tree. Because, the third tree is the total number of guavas collected in the first two trees.

5(3n+n)+5 = 65

   15n+5n  = 65-5

         20n = 60

              n = 3

There are 3 children so divide n by 3

Hence, the answer is 1 guava.

3. To check if the answer is correct, let's count how many guavas are collected in the 1st and 2nd tree:

1st tree  = 1 + 1 + 1 = 3

2nd tree= 3 + 3 + 3 = 9

In the third tree, they had 5 times the number of guavas in the 1st and 2nd tree so,

9+3 = 12 guavas collected in the 1st and 2nd tree

12 * 5 = 60

In the fourth tree, they only collected 5 so we will add 5.

60 + 5 = 65

This proves our answer is correct.

Hope it helps :>

Given :-

  • Total guavas picked by three children = 65 .
  • At the first tree they each picked the same number of guavas.
  • At the second tree they each collected three times the number of guavas that they had collected at the first tree.
  • After picking from the third tree they had five times the number of guvas they had after picking from the first two trees.
  • At the fourth tree they collected only five guavas altogether.

To Find :- How many guavas did each child collect at the first tree ?

Solution :-

Let us assume that, each child collect x number of guavas at first tree .

First tree :-

→ Guavas picked by each child = x

→ Total children = 3

So,

→ Total guavas picked = 3 × x = 3x

Second tree :-

→ Guavas picked by each child = 3 times of guavas picked at first tree = 3x

→ Total children = 3

So,

→ Total guavas picked = 3 × 3x = 9x

Third tree :-

→ Total guavas picked = 5(Total guavas picked at first tree + Total guavas picked at first tree) = 5(3x + 9x) = 5 × 12x = 60x

Fourth tree :-

→ Total guavas picked = 5

Now,

→ Total guavas picked in four days = 65

→ Total guavas picked in third day + Total guavas picked in fourth day = 65

→ 60x + 5 = 65

→ 60x = 65 - 5

→ 60x = 60

→ x = 1 (Ans.)

Hence, each child collect 1 guava at the first tree .
