Central government is present in the entire county and functions in whole country.

State government is present in states and is not subordinate to the central government

Explanation:

Central government legislate on union list subject and state government legislate on state list subject.

In centre we have president as executive head of state whereas in state we have governor as a executive head.

The constitution of india provides for a federal system of government due to this there is a division of legislative and administrative power between the central and state governments.

It divides all the subjects and matters into 3 lists are union list, state list and concurrent list.

The division of power between the central and state governments is done in a three fold distribution of legislative powers between the union government and the state government.

Concurrent list includes those subjects which are of common interest to both the central as well as state governments.

The duties of the union or central government include subjects of national importance such as defence of the country, foreign affairs, banking, communications and currency.

This is because of uniform policy on these matters will be maintained throughout the country.
