A selectively permeable substance is something that lets some things in, but not others.
For example, a coffee filter allows water through, but not the coffee grounds. Cell membranes are also selectively permeable. Some other things are:
sponges
the ears of some people (selective hearing- ha!)
breathable fabrics (allow airflow, but not things like sticks or bugs)
