Concept-

An equation is called a linear equation in two variables if it is written in the form ax + by + c=0, where a, b and c are real numbers and the coefficients of x and y, i.e. a and b, respectively, are not equal to 0.

Given-

(i) Three-fifths of Sandy's income exceeds one-third of Randy's income by Rs. 4000

(ii) the difference of their incomes is Rs. 1000

Find -

Income of sandy

Solution-

Let Sandy's income = x

Let Randy's income = y

According to the question , we can form 2 equations in two variables and  solve them-

1st equation -

(3/5) x = (1/3)y + 4000

Now taking L.C.M. and simplifying the equation we will get,

(3/5)x = (y+12000)/3

Now , by cross multiplying we will get,

9x -5y  = 60000 …..(i)

2nd equation -

x-y = 1000.....(ii)

Now solving equation (i) and (ii)

Multiplying equation (ii) with 5 and then subtracting (ii) from (i) we will get,

4x = 55000

x = 13750

Income of Sandy = Rs. 13750

Income of Randy = Rs. 12750

Therefore , the income of Sandy is Rs. 13750.
