Three-Fifths of the men in chemistry class have beards and two-thirds of the women have long hair. If there are 120 men in the class and 46 are not in the above groups, how many men and how many women are there in the class?

Let no. of men = x

So, no. of men with beards = 3x/5

Let no. of women = y.

So, no. of women with long hair = 2y/3

3x/5 + 2y/3 + 46 = x + y

2x/5 + y/3 = 46

6x + 5y = 690 ....... (i)

Now, x + y = 120 (given)

So, 5x + 5y = 600 ....... (ii)

Subtracting (ii) from (i),

x = 90

y = 120 - 90 = 30

Therefore, no. of men = 90 and no. of women = 30
