Three flexible pipes that can serve as inlet as well as outlet pipes have been attached to a tank. The rates of filling or emptying the tank by these three pipes are in the ratio 1 : 2 : 4. The largest pipe can alone fill the empty tank in 7 hours. Initially the tank is full and the three pipes were used as outlet pipes for ‘M’ hours. After the tank is emptied, later the smallest pipe alone filled the entire tank in 28 hours. Find the value of ‘M

Solution :-

Let us assume that, three pipes in increasing order of their diameter are A(smallest) , B and C(largest) and there filling or emptying rate are x litre/hour , 2x litre/hour and 4x litre/hour respectively .

So,

→ Pipe C(largest) can fill the empty tank alone in = 7 hours .

then,

→ Total capacity of full tank = C emptying rate * Time taken = 4x * 7 = 28x litres .

also,

→ Pipe A(smallest) fill the empty tank alone in = 28 hours .

→ Filling rate of pipe A = x litre / hour .

→ Total capacity of full tank = x * 28 = 28x litres .

then,

→ All three pipes empty the full tank in = M hours .

→ Total empty rate of all three pipes = x + 2x + 4x = 7x litre / hour .

therefore,

→ Total capacity of tank = Total time taken to empty * Total empty rate of all three pipes

→ 28x = M * 7x

→ M = 4 hours (Ans.)

Hence, the value of 'M' is equal to 4 .
