Sumit scored 88 marks in maths and 65 marks in Science.

1) Let the marks scored in maths be X and marks scored in science be Y.

2) According to first statement, 3X/4 = 2Y/5 + 40 or 3X/4 - 2Y/5 = 40

3) 15X - 8Y = 800

4) According to the second statement, X+Y = 153.

5) Solving these, two equations in two variables gives X = 88 and Y = 65.
