Three friends all live on the same street that runs west to east. Beth lives 5 blocks from Ann. Carl lives 2 blocks from Beth. If the street is represented by a number line and Ann's house is located at 0, what are the possible locations for Carl's house? Assume that each unit on the number line represents 1 block.

The possible locations for Carl's house are -7, -3, 3 and 7.

  • As given in the question, Ann's house is located at 0 on a number line and Beth lives 5 blocks from Ann. So, the possible locations of Beth are 5 and -5 on the number line.
  • Since Carl lives 2 blocks from Beth, he either stays 2 blocks closer to Ann than Beth or stays 2 blocks away from Ann than Beth.
  • 2 blocks closer to Ann is 3 on the number line and 2 blocks away from Ann is 7 on the number line. So the possible locations of Carl on the positive side of the number line are 3 and 7.
  • Similarly, on the negative side of the number line, the possible location of Carl is -3 and -7.
