Ch-1


The three friends — George, Harris and the narrator — discuss about their imagined illness. Then they decide to go out for a holiday. The readers can have a peep into the working of the narrator’s mind. They come to know how people suffer from sea-sickness and how they refuse to admit it in their conversation with others on land.


Ch-2


After taking a decision of having a boat trip along the river, the friends plan their journey. They plan to ‘camp out’ at night when it does not rain, but decide to sleep in a hotel or pub when it rains. The debate is adjourned to the following night. All the three put on their hats and go out.


Ch-3


The friends now decide about the things to be taken on the trip. Harris who does not want to do work himself is compared to Uncle Podger. The character of Uncle Podger is described in details and in a humorous manner. Jim (the narrator) makes a philosophical comment. He says that the boat of life should be Light because it will be easier to pull.


Ch-4


They are busy in packing. They do foolish actions while packing. They keep light bottom and heavy things on the squashes a tomato and sits on Montmorency creates confusion. He into the jam. The packing is finished night. They plan to wake up at 6.30.


Ch-5


A lot of discussion takes place. They consider ‘weather-forecast’ a fraud. They don’t trust them. A lot of luggage that they place on the doorstep attracts attention of others. People curiously look at the luggage. A small crowd collects there. One group remarks that it is a wedding, while another group says that it is a funeral. They bribe the engine driver and reach Kingston.Finally, they store their luggage in the boat and step in and start their journey.


Ch-6


It is late spring and their journey takes them to historical places. The narrator is reminded of a magnificent carved oak staircase in one of the houses of Kingston. Jim narrates the story of a school boy who loved studies. Harris narrates about the maze at the Hampton Court.


Ch-7


The boat moves ahead. The narrator Criticises ladies for their dress sense. They do not know how to dress up for a boat ride. They spoil the fun of their companions. The narrator does not like Harris for expressing his desire to visit Mrs. Thomas’ grave. Finally, he pacifies Harris who was keen to visit Mrs Thomas’ grave.


Ch-8


where George joins them. Three important incidents are described in this chapter. The first concerns the man who tries to blackmail them. The second concerns the song of Herr Boschen. The third concerns the narrator who sculls upto Walton. He finds himself sculling round and round at the same place. This provides amusement to the onlookers. Then George arrives and joins them.


Ch-9


The narrator describes his experience with tow line. There is a description of two men who lost their boat while dealing with the tow-line. The narrator says that being towed by girls is an exciting experience. He describes what happened to him when he went out with a young lady, his cousin, on a river trip.


Ch-10


After the first day’s journey, they put up a camp at night and sleep. Their struggle to put up the cover has an element of humour. All the three become good, polite and happy after eating supper. They realise the futility of quarrels and anger. The night has a soothing effect on them. The soothing night, like some great loving mother, lays her hand on their feverish heads and removes their pain.
