Once Jerome carried some ripe cheese for Tom from Liverpool to London. Wherever he took the cheese, funny things happened. The cheese had two hundred horse power scent that could spread for three miles and knock a man over at two hundred yards.

When he took it in the cab and the wind carried the smell of the cheese to the horse, he found it unbearable and started running at a speed of 3 to 4 miles an hour. He had to be stopped at the station by two porters and the driver. One of them put a handkerchief over the horses nose and lit a bit of brown paper.

He marched proudly on the platform with the cheese, people started giving him way, as if out of respect.

The train was overcrowded, there were seven people in the carriage in which he entered. He put the cheese upon the rack and squeezed himself between the passengers. Two gentlemen fidgeted and sniffed thrice and then left the compartment. Then a stout lady said it was disgraceful and took her bag and eight parcels and went away. Other passengers tried to get out of the door at the same time and hurt themselves. The last man also changed his compartment.

At other stations people tried to get into the carriage but left immediately. So he could travel alone in the compartment though the train was overcrowded.

When he took the cheese to the friend's house, his wife refused to stay in the house until the cheese was eaten. The stench of the cheese was unbearable so ultimately it had to be buried miles away at the seaside.
