The three most common methods by which free atmospheric nitrogen is converted into nitrates are -

1. Nitrification - In this method, nitrifying bacteria that are present in the soil helps in converting the ammonia into nitrites (NO₂⁻) and into nitrates (NO₃⁻).

2. By Lightning - The massive blasts coming from the lightning flashes help in converting the atmospheric nitrogen gas (N₂) into nitrates when they combine with atmospheric oxygen. These nitrates can be dissolved in rainwater.

3. Ammonification - It is also called a mineralization. It is a process where ammonifying bacteria convert organic nitrogen (N₂) into ammonia (NH₃). the bacteria involved are species of Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Clostridium etc. Nitrification process later converts this ammonia into nitrites and nitrates.
I hope this will help you!!
