Three-minute fun reads • Hibernation is the term used to describe the state of inactivity certain vertebrates get into, usually to avoid harsh winter. Fishes, amphibians, reptiles and a few mammals such as hedgehogs, ground squirrels and bears are among those that hibernate. When they hibernate, there is extremely reduced activity and their body temperatures come down; sometimes it reaches nearfreezing. However, hibernation happens not in winter alone. Apparently, hibernators in the tropics do so to avoid the heat. Also, it is believed that hibernation happens to deal with food shortage. For instance, The “National Geographic” states that “echidnas in Australia will hibernate after fires, waiting until food resources rebound to resume normal activities”. • The dwarf lemurs of Madagascar are the only primates that hibernate on a regular schedule. ACTIVITY CORNER 1. Does hibernation happen only in winter? __________________________________ 2. In which continent is Madagascar located?
