Three oxides of lead on analysis were found to contain lead as under
(1) 3.45 g of yellow oxide contains 3.21 g of lead. 93
(ii) 1.195 g of brown oxide contains 1.035 g of lead
(11) 1.77 g of red oxide contains 1.61 g of lead. Show that these data illustrate law if multiple
proportions.
al contain 27 6% and 30% of oxygen respectively. If the first compound is M20.

Answer:

● Law of multiple proportions -

It states that when two elements combine with each other to form more than one compound, the weights of one element that combine with a fixed weight of the other are in a ratio of small whole numbers.

● Illustration -

(i) In yellow oxide,

Mass of oxide = 3.45 g

Mass of lead = 3.21 g

Mass of oxygen = 0.24 g

Ratio of O/Pb = 0.24/3.21 = 0.075

(ii) In brown oxide,

Mass of oxide = 1.195 g

Mass of lead = 1.035 g

Mass of oxygen = 0.16 g

Ratio of O/Pb = 0.16/1.035 = 0.15

(iii) In red oxide,

Mass of oxide = 1.77 g

Mass of lead = 1.61 g

Mass of oxygen = 0.16 g

Ratio of O/Pb = 0.16/1.61 = 0.1

Therefore, simple ratio of oxygen in three lead oxides is given as 0.075 : 0.15 : 0.1 = 3 : 6 : 4 .
