Given :

  • q₁ = 1 μC placed at (1m , 0 , 0)
  • q₂ = -2 μC placed at (0 , 2m , 0)
  • q₃ = 3 μC placed at (0 , 0 , 3m)

To find :

  • Electric potential(V) at origin.

Solution :

  • The distances of the charges q₁, q₂ and q₃ from the origin are 1m , 2m and 3m respectively. We can tell this by looking at the co-ordinates.
  • We know that, electric potential due to a charge q at a distance r is given by :

        V = (1/4πε₀)(q/r)

  • Hence, the net potential due to the three charges will be :

        V = (1/4πε₀)(q₁/r₁) + (1/4πε₀)(q₂/r₂) + (1/4πε₀)(q₃/r₃)

            = (1/4πε₀) [(q₁/r₁) + (q₂/r₂) + (q₃/r₃) ]

            = (1/4πε₀) [\frac{1 . 10^{-6} }{1} - \frac{2 . 10^{-6} }{2} + \frac{3 . 10^{-6} }{3}]

            = 9 × 10⁹× 10⁻⁶ [ 1 - 1 + 1]          ....(∵ (1/4πε₀) = 9 × 10⁹ N/C )

         V = 9 × 10³ V

Answer:

The potential at the origin is 9000 V.
