Advantages:

1. It gives backward groups the opportunity to demand a share in power and decision making.  
2. The caste system has promoted contentment and the stability of Indian society.
3. It preserves the advantages of hereditary skill.

Disadvantages:  

1. Caste-based politics diverts attention from main issues such as poverty, corruption etc.
2. Caste system prevents the choice of occupations according to one’s personal taste and ability.
3. Since change of occupations is debarred by the caste system, mobility of labour is not possible.
