GIVEN:

Three resistances of 4Ω, 5Ω and 20Ω. All of them are set in the parallel combination.

TO FIND:

Total or Effective Resistance (Rp)

SOLUTION:

R1 = 4Ω

R2 = 5Ω

R3 = 20Ω

We know that, in a parallel combination,

1/Rp = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3

==> 1/Rp = 1/4 + 1/5 + 1/20

==> 1/Rp = 5/20 + 4/20 + 1/20 [LCM = 20]

==> 1/Rp = (5 + 4 + 1)/20

==> 1/Rp = 10/20

==> 1/Rp = 1/2

Cross-Multiplying,

==> Rp = 2

∴ The effective resistance is
