Three resistances of 4Ω ,6Ω, and 12Ω are connected in parallel. If the current through the 12Ω is 0.2A. Find:

i) the potential difference across the arrangement
ii) the effective resistance across the arrangement
iii) current through each of the other two resistances.

Answer:

Voltage =2.4 volts

Effective Resistance = 2 ohm

Current in two resistors is 0.6 and 0.4 amphere

Explanation:

I) In a parallel circuit, voltage is same across all resistors and equal to voltage source.

Using V = IR = 0.2x12=2.4 volts

ii) Effective resistance ,

1/Reff =1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3

=1/4+1/6+1/12=(3+2+1)/12

1/Reff=1/2

Reff =2 ohm

iii) Voltage is 2.4 volts

so using I=V/R we get

I1 = 2.4/4=0.6 amp

I2 = 2.4/6=0.4 amp
