we are looking for the highest common factor (HCF) of 48,96 & 104. Just looking at the numbers, 96=2*48 & 48=2*24 but 104 throws a spanner in the works as it is not divisible by 24 - however 104–96=8 and 104 is divisible by 8 also 8 is a factor of 24,48 & 96 so 8 is the HCF. 48/8=6, 96/8=12 & 104/8=13 so you will get 6+12+13= 31 pieces 8″ long.
