Correct Question :- Three shops A, B and sold car in January, February and March . The total number of cars sold in this three-month period by A, B and were 400, 320 and 500 respectively. Both A and C sold the same number of cars in January. The number of cars sold by A and C in March was also the same. A sold 120 cars in February which was half of the number of cars sold by C in March. Both A and B sold exactly the same number of cars in February. The ratio of the number of cars sold by B in January, and March was 1:4. What was the ratio of the total number of cars sold in January, February and March by the three shops ?

Answer :-

from given statements we have,

  1. Total cars sold by A = 400 .
  2. Total cars sold by B = 320 .
  3. Total cars sold by C = 500 .
  4. A and C sold same number of cars in January = Let x cars .
  5. A and B sold same number of cars in february = Let y cars .
  6. A and C sold same number of cars in March = Let z cars .
  7. A sold cars in February = 120 = Half of cars sold by C in march
  8. The ratio of the number of cars sold by B in January, and March was 1:4.

so, from Statement (7) and (5) ,

→ A = B in february = y = 120

→ (z/2) = 120

z = 240 => A and C sold in march .

now, from statement (1),

→ Total cars sold by A = 400 cars .

→ Total cars sold in march by A in february and march = 120 + 240 = 360 cars

so,

→ Cars sold by A in January = 400 - 360 = 40 cars. = x .

now, from statement (3),

→ Total cars sold by C = 500

→ Total cars sold by C in january = x = 40 cars .

→ Total cars sold by C in march = z = 240 cars .

so,

→ Cars sold by C in february = 500 - (240 + 40) = 220 cars.

now, we have given that,

→ cars sold by B in January : cars sold by B in march = 1 : 4 = Let m and 4m .

so, from statement (2),

→ Total cars sold by B = 320 cars .

→ Total cars sold in march by B in january and march = m + 4m = 5m cars

so,

→ Cars sold by B in february = y => (320 - 5m) => 320 - 5m = 120 => 5m = 200 => m = 40.

then ,

→ Cars sold by B in January = m = 40 cars .

→ Cars sold by B in March = 4m = 40 * 4 = 160 cars .

therefore, we get,

→ Total cars sold in January = 40(A) + 40(B) + 40(C) = 120 cars .

→ Total cars sold in february = 120(A) + 120(B) + 220(C) = 460 cars .

→ Total cars sold in March = 240(A) + 160(B) + 240(C) = 640 cars .

hence,

→ Required ratio = 120 : 460 : 640 = 12 : 46 : 64 = 6 : 23 : 32 (Ans.)
