Three small equilateral triangles of the same size are cut from the corners of a larger equilateral triangle with sides of 6 cm, as shown. The sum of the perimeters of the three small triangles is equal to the perimeter of the remaining grey hexagon. What is the side length of the small triangles?

Answer:

Let the side length of small triangle be x

Then sum of perimeters of three small triangles=9x

Three sides of hexagon each will be x and other three sides of hexagon each will be 6-2x

So perimeter of the hexagon=3x+3(6-2x)=3x+18-6x=18-3x

It is given 9x=18-3x

12x=18

x=18/12=3/2= 1.5 cm Ans
