Answer:

1. Solution

2. Colloid

3. Suspension

4. Colloid

Explanation:

When two or more substances completely dissolve in a solution then it forms a homogeneous mixture and this solution is known as true solution.

When microscopically a substance is suspended into another liquid throughout the solution then it is known as colloid.

When particles of solute present in a solution suspend after their addition into the solution then that solution is known as suspension.

Therefore, given mixtures are classified as follows.

Water and glucose powder will form a true solution.

Water and milk will form a colloid.

Water and sand will form a suspension.

Water and soil will form a suspension.

❒ According to question,

  • Chalk powder + Water is a Suspension.

[Since, Chalk powder is insoluble in water, it is a heterogeneous mixture. They spread throughout the liquid, but after sometime they tend to settle at the bottom. Due, to this the above mixture is a Suspension.]

❒ Explanation:

Since, we are given three mixtures of some components with water, we have to judge whether they are suspension/colloid/solution. Based on observations, here are results.

  • Chalk Powder + Water (Suspension)

As already explained, Chalk is insoluble in water. They create a suspension of fine chalk particles in water. After sometime, they settle at the bottom. Also, the particles can be seen with naked eyes.

  • Milk + Water (Colloid)

It is a colloid since, the particles do not settle at the bottom. Also, the particles are very small to see with naked eyes. They scatters light, and the path of light is visible.

  • Glucose + Water (Solution)

It is a Solution, because Glucose is soluble in water. It forms a homogenous mixture. The size of particles is extremely small. The particles could pass through filter paper. The particles do not separate on keeping undisturbed. It doesn't scatter light.

Explore more!

  1. Solution is homogenous, but colloid and solution are heterogeneous in nature.
  2. Range of particles size: Solution(< 10‐⁹ m), Colloid(between 10-⁶ m and 10-⁹ m) and Suspension (> 10‐⁶ m)
  3. Particles of Colloid and Suspension scatters light, and the light is visible(Tyndall effect), whereas light is not visible through Solution.
  4. Solution and Colloid are stable in nature. But, Suspension is unstable. That's why, Particles do not settle at the bottom in Solution and Colloid.
