Three teachers P, Q, R were talking about six students A, B, C, D, E and F who wrote an examination in Physics. P predicted that B, D, A and C would get 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th ranks respectively and the other two would fail. Q predicted that E,B,A and F would get 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th ranks respectively and the other two would fail. R predicted that A, D, F and E would get 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th ranks respectively and the other two would fail. When the results were announced, it was found out that: Exactly two persons got the same ranks as predicted by P, one student got the same rank as predicted by Q and one student got the same rank as predicted by R. Exactly two students, who were predicted to pass by P, failed. Exactly, one student, who was predicted to pass by Q, failed. Exactly one student, who was predicted to pass by R, failed. Who is the 3rd ranker?

Given :  Prediction by three teachers P , Q & R about 6 Students A , B , C , D , E & F  about their exam in Physics and announce results

To Find : who got 3rd Rank

Solution:

P predicted that B, D, A and C would get 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th ranks respectively and the other two would fail.

Q predicted that E,B,A and F would get 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th ranks respectively and the other two would fail.

R predicted that A, D, F and E would get 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th ranks respectively and the other two would fail.

Converted this data in Table

Teacher      1          2           3          4        FAIL    FAIL

P                 B         D           A          C         E         F

Q                 E         B           A          F         C         D

R                  A        D            F         E          B        C

Announced result were as below :

Exactly two persons got the same ranks as predicted by P

Exactly one student got the same rank as predicted by Q

Exactly one student got the same rank as predicted by R

Exactly two students, who were predicted to pass by P, failed

=> E & F  not Failed

Exactly, one student, who was predicted to pass by Q, failed.

=>  A or B Failed

Exactly one student, who was predicted to pass by R, failed

=>  A or D failed

As in total two students failed

Hence B & D failed  or A & C Failed

Case 1 -

  B & D failed

=> A , C , E & F got Rank

=> A & C got the same ranks as predicted by P

=> D should be 2nd Raker but D failed

Hence not possible

Case 2 -

A & C  Failed

=> B & D got the same ranks as predicted by P

=> R Prediction for D is correct

=> F got 4th Rank

& E got 3rd Rank

   1          2           3          4        FAIL    FAIL

   B         D          E           F         A          C

E got 3rd Rank
