Three years ago the sum of the ages of the father and his son was 54 years, 3 years later the father age will be double of the son age after nine years. Find the present ages of father and sons.

Let the age of Father be x and age of son be y

Now ATQ,

(x-3) +  (y-3) = 54

x + y - 6 = 54

x+y = 60                                     (i)

x = 60 - y                                    (ii)

(x+3) = 2(y+9)

x+3 = 2y + 18

x - 2y = 15

substituting value of x from equation (ii)

60 - y - 2y = 15

3y = 45   or   y = 15                   (iii)

Now substituting value of y in (i)

x+15=60

x = 45

Hence

Father's present age = 45 years

Son's present age = 15 years
