Given : Three years hence a man's age will be three times his son's age and 7 years ago he was 7 times as old as his son

To Find : How old are they now

Solution:

Man's age = M Years

Son's Age  = S  Years

Three years hence   man's age  = M + 3  Years

Three years hence Son's Age  = S+3  Years

Three years hence a man's age will be three times his son's age

=>  M + 3 = 3(S + 3)

=> M + 3 = 3S + 9

=> M = 3S + 6

7 years Ago   man's age  = M -7  Years

7 years Ago Son's Age  = S-7  Years

7 years ago he was 7 times as old as his son.

=>  M - 7 = 7(S - 7)

=> M - 7 = 7S -49

=> M = 7S -42

3S + 6 = 7S -42

=> 4S = 48

=> S = 12

M =  3S + 6  = 3* 12 + 6  = 42

Man's Age = 42  Years

Son's Age =  12    Years
