Ear, nose and throat are all connected internally with the help of auditory tube called eustachian tube and sinuses. Eustachian tube runs down from the middle ear. It normally remains closed, but  get open during yawning and swallowing.  It helps in maintaining pressure in the ear by circulation of fluids. So, now you can understand that due to this connection, infection in throat can lead to infection in ear or ear pain.
