Napoleon had destroyed democracy in France but he introduced civil code of 1804 which did away with all privileges based on birth. Thus, it can be concluded that Napoleon had destroyed democracy in France but in administrative field he had incorporated revolutionary principles.

Napoleon and his democracy

  • Napoleon established himself as a powerful leader in France curtailing the rights of the people. He made sure people followed his authoritarian rule.
  • But he on the administrative front always wanted to treat people equally and hence by establishing civil code, he made sure people were given their birthright.
  • To ease the burden of the working class he reduced the taxes thus helping them achieve a better way of living.
