The mahajanapadas came into being towards the end of the vedic period. The tribal polity was transformed into one based on land ownership due to agricultural advances and growth of trade, also called the second urbanisation in Indian history ( The first being the Indus Valley Civilization).

The textual source of the mahajanapadas comes from mainly the Buddhist and Jaina literature, as also the Puranas. However, the description of the sixteen mahajanapadas given in the Abhidamba pitaka, which is one of the three tripitika buddhist texts in pali, is considered as most authentic and complete.
