The main cause of the second Maratha war due to the defeat of the peshwa Baji Rao II by the Holkars, one of the prominent Maratha clans, as a result of which he accepted British protection by signing the Treaty of Bassein in December 1802.

Four reasons of the second Anglo- Maratha war are defined below :

• Tipu Sultan's city Mysore was captured by the Britishers , then the Marathas were the only major left of the British domination.

• The Scindias and the Bhonsles didn't accept the treaty .

• This was the reason of Anglo- Martha war which took place in central India (1803)

•As a result of the war , large parts of central India came under the control of the Britishers.
