When Ashoka became the emperor of the Mauryan Dynasty he introduced many administrative policies. Ashoka retained the traditional system of centralised Government. Ashoka was the center of administration. The crown Prince and the Kumaras governs the Provinces. There was a Council or ministers who assist in the administration and gives advice regarding important matters.
Ashoka held the customary administrative divisions of the Empire into provinces or pradesas or regions. These Provinces were again subdivided into Aharas or Vishyas or subdivisions and Janapadas, which were additionally subdivided into towns.
