Teenagers today seem overloaded by things to do and information to absorb. It's not unusual for a young person to come home late from school because of an after-school activity, turn on the TV and computer and be messaging friends while watching a programme with one eye, texting on the mobile with the other, somehow managing to play a computer game as well while eating a hasty meal.

Watching programmes on TV can be an excellent way of acquiring information. It is also a form of social networking in that teenagers by watching the same programme not only have something to talk about with friends, but reinforce the bonds they have with each other by doing so. TV programmes can also raise important discussion points - issues of relationships, sexuality, politics, the environment - and can trigger your teenager to ask questions, or allow you to check out their knowledge and opinions.

Using the internet and mobile phones keeps teenagers connected, not only to their friends but to a broader range of people which widens their horizons. So on the surface of it, stimulation doesn't seem to be a problem. Except, as with anything, too much of the same can get you in a rut. Some young people become stuck in repetitive actions. Rather than learning new things from their access, they’re simply repeating the same thing over and over.

. It’s hard to know where the line falls between safe, rewarding use and overuse of technology.

Recognising the value of what they are doing on technology, whether computer or mobile phone, raises their self-esteem. Teenagers are often unaware of their skill in this area.

If young people understand what it means to be a good ‘digital citizen’, parents have every reason to trust them with managing their own internet use, just as they trust them to act responsibly when they’re at school and out with friends.

It’s all about balance..

All of us, especially young people, need to learn how to exercise moderation in the things we spend time on. Technology for teens is fun and allows them to stay connected to their friends and family, which is important. Some teenagers will do this by spending a lot of time connecting with their friends on social media, or by hanging out with other ‘gamers’ when playing multi-player games online. That’s okay!

But it’s important to support them to balance that with physical exercise, learning, and other types of play, and to make sure they leave enough time in their week for face-to-face time with people...
