Answer:

  1. Maps are easier to use and easier to carry around. They can show the earth's entire surface or just a small part and can show even a small locality in a great detail.
  2. Read on as we take a look at some of the different map types and their uses. According to the ICSM (Intergovernmental Committee on Surveying and Mapping), there are five different types of maps: General Reference, Topographical, Thematic, Navigation Charts and Cadastral Maps and Plans
  3. The symbols used in the map representing different things and different geographical situations is generally referred as language of map. These symbols include drawings, , lines, shortened words, drawings or coloured areas.
  4. A key or legend is a list of symbols that appear on the map. For example, a church on the map may appear as a cross, a cross attached to a circle, a cross attached to a square. A church symbol with a square means that the church has a tower, while a circle means the church has a spire.
  5. The grid helps people locate places on the map. On small-scale maps, the grid is often made up of latitude and longitude lines. Latitude lines run east-west around the globe, parallel to the Equator, an imaginary line that circles the middle of the Earth. Longitude lines run north-south, from pole to pole.
