Hey There! A great question indeed !!!!!!
Now, this answer might be a new info for most of you.
Because, the new generations of this 21st century have learned from their very young age that 'Tiger is the National Animal of India'...
Most of us didn't bother to know the story behind this statement ...
Lion was our National Animal before 1972...
But, a striking fact took away this prestigious title of lions in 1972...
Lions were restricted only to the Gir Forests of Gujarat...
Whereas, Tigers were found in 16 states of India...
Since tigers were spread all over India & lions were found only in Gujarat, the Indian Government decided to declare Royal Bengal Tiger as our National Animal in 1972.
In the same year, 'Project Tiger' was announced by the Government for tiger conservation...

Informative one! Sad how humans don't think how to save animals but just use them for marketing. Wondering where we would've been without our past
