Given :   Tim uses his lorry to deliver turf . Graph showing delivery costs for different distances . For each delivery there is a fixed charge plus a charge for distance

To find :  fixed charge  ,  difference between the two delivery costs for 2 miles  difference

Solution:

Let say total Cost  = Fixed Charge + Charge per unit of  distance * Distance

T = F  + CD

T = Total Cost for a given Distance   £

F = Fixed Cost   £

C = Cost per unit of  distance    £ / miles

D = Distance  Miles

From graph for D = 0  T = 12

=> 12 = F +  C(0)

=> F = 12

Fixed Cost  = 12

For Distance 20 Cost = 40

=> 40 = F + C(20)

=> 40 = 12 + 20C

=> C = 28/20

=> C = 1.4 £  / miles

Let say Distance for one Delivery = x  & for other  = x + 20

Charges are = 12+ 1.4x     & 12 + 1.4(x + 20)

Difference  = 12 + 1.4(x + 20) -  12+ 1.4x  = 28  £

fixed charge = 12  £

difference between the two delivery costs with 20 miles difference = 28  £
