TEXT I:
The chief cause of superstition is lack of proper education Primitive man had an
unreasoning belief in magic, sorcery and witchcraft and suffered from irrational fears of
the unknown and the mysterious. He could not be blamed for that because he had no
education and therefore lacked the ability to find out the real causes of natural events
and happenings. However, the growth of education and advancement in science arose
the possibility of understanding natural phenomena objectively.
Science is not merely a method, technique or procedure. It is essentially a certain
frame of mind -what is commonly called as scientific temper. It is one of the greatest
ironies of human life that development of science does not necessarily lead to the
development of a scientific temper. It is for this reason that even the so-called educated
people, including scientists, are victims of superstitions. Eclipses, sneezing, crossing of
one's way by a cat, screeching of owls at night and hundreds of other things are treated
as ill omens. Many Indians do not like to begin their journey on certain days of the week
and even refuse to go in for a haircut on Tuesdays. In fact, there is no limit to
superstitions and usually they are passed on by one generation to another. It is only a
truly secular and scientific education that can rid mankind of superstitions.
