1. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions :- (10)
News papers are one of the most important and powerful means of communication and
information in the modern age. They are a part and parcel of our life. They satisfy
different tastes and requirements of different people. The intellectual, the politician,
the business man, the sportsman, the unemployed, the student everyone finds
something worthwhile for himself in them. The word 'NEWS' is significant. The four
letters stand for North, East, West and South respectively. Thus newspapers give us
information from all the four corners of the world. They inform us, educate us, entertain
us, and inspire us.
Newspapers are an important link between the people and the government. It is
through newspapers that people learn about the plans, projects and policies of the
government. Also, they are the mouth piece of public opinion. They publicise the
reactions and responses' of the masses to the government's activities. This helps the
government feel the pulse of the people and effect changes in its working accordingly.
Newspapers guide, instruct and educate the masses on all important problems
of the day. They publish editorials and articles on different subjects and problems by
specialists. On reading these editorials and articles people get enlightened and get rid of
their misgivings and doubts.

A ans 1 . The English word "news" developed in the 14th century as a special use of the plural form of "new". In Middle English, the equivalent word was newes, like the French nouvelles and the German Neues.
