time of flight is the total time during which a body remains in motion ie when a body is thrown vertically upwards the time from when it leaves the ground and till it reaches back is called time of flight.
derivation
time of ascent ( upward motion)
when a body is thrown upwards it has initial velocity but it's final velocity is zero
therefore v=u+at=>0=u-gt
gt=u => t=u/g

when the body goes upwards then maximum height =v²=u²-2gh
u²=2gh( as v²= 0)
h = u²/2g
when a body goes down
h=1/2gt²
then time of going down= t=√2h/g
substituting h in t=√2h/g
t=√2*u²/2g/g=√u²/g²
t=u/g
then time of flight=t+t=u/g+u/g=2u/g
