Time taken by the sunlight to pass through a slab of thickness 4 mm and refractive index 1.5 is, given

c=3×108ms−1,

μ=32, x=4×10−3m,

vg=cμ =3×1083/2 =2×108ms−1 t=xvg =4×10−32×108 =2×10−11s.

optical distance in a medium of refractive index μ and thickness t is μx and time =μxc here c- is velocity of light,

t=1.5×4×10−33×108 =2×1011 seconds.
