First write the names of all places and then location through which you will get a layout then practice that on map.
Importantly do all map questions of all sample papers

I always get good marks in map , what I do is mark all the important places , dams , region etc from my notes , CBSE sample paper allllllll in one single map !!!
Doing that it will be easy for me to remember all the important places in the same spot . It's also best idea for revision of maps .
