Chondrocytes rely on diffusion to obtain nutrients as, unlike bone, cartilage is avascular, meaning there are no vessels to carry blood to cartilage tissue. This lack of blood supply causes cartilage toheal very slowly compared with bone.

A tissue that is avascular and as a result is slow to heal is (b) cartilage.

  • Cartilage is avascular as they don't have any blood vessels- arteries and veins.
  • No blood vessels mean no blood and hence no blood-forming tissues such as macrophages, dendrites etc.
  • Macrophage and natural killer cells are involved in the repair and regeneration. but absences of these lead to slow healing processes in cartilage.
  • Bone, epithelial and adipose all are vascular and heal faster compared with cartilage.
